Human evolution is not a straight line and prehistory is littered with hominids that never made it. Putting flesh and skin back onto ancient bones, this original series recreates every inch of three of our earliest ancestors. From fragments of bones to a recognisable face, prepare to meet some remarkable relatives.
Using cutting-edge technology and the specialised knowledge of world class experts, this original and extraordinary series attempts a science and television first. Gathering all the disparate, fragmentary evidence of three of our most significant prehistoric ancestors together, the team will completely rebuild their bodies, revealing how they moved, how they lived and most remarkably, how much like us they were. A team of experts set to work using the latest fossil evidence, genetic data, bone casts and tissue research to create full skeletons. Each skeleton is then submitted to 3D wire frame animations, revealing gait, posture and size in staggering detail. No complete skeleton has ever been found of many of our human predecessors.
Each programme in this series focuses on one hominid - Australopithecus afarensis, Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis. Drawing on their areas of expertise, the team of ancestor detectives visit locations around the world where the latest human ancestor research has emerged, whether from 3.6 million year old Australopithecus footprints in volcanic ash or evidence of Neanderthal cannibalism. Back at HQ the team pool their knowledge and collaborate with prosthetics and forensic model specialists to test out body parts, from skeleton to musculature to teeth, face, hair and even voice. Revealing the complete assembled bod, it's time to come face to face with three of the most extraordinary episodes in human evolution.
